Paan is a traditional Indian preparation that typically combines betel leaf with various fillings and flavors. Sweet paan, or “meetha paan,” is a popular variety that is enjoyed as a dessert or mouth freshener. Here’s a basic recipe for making sweet paan:

Ingredients:

  • Betel leaves (paan leaves) – 4 to 6 large leaves
  • Gulkand (rose petal preserve) – 4 to 6 teaspoons
  • Desiccated coconut – 2 tablespoons
  • Fennel seeds (saunf) – 2 tablespoons
  • Tutti frutti (candied fruit) – 2 tablespoons
  • Chopped dates – 2 tablespoons
  • Chopped cashews or almonds – 2 tablespoons
  • Sugar-coated fennel seeds – 2 tablespoons
  • Sweetened condensed milk or khoya (optional) – 2 tablespoons
  • Cardamom powder – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Glazed cherries for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Betel Leaves:
  • Rinse the betel leaves under cold water and pat them dry with a paper towel.
  • Using a sharp knife or scissors, trim the stem at the base of each leaf.
  • If desired, carefully remove the central vein to make the leaves easier to fold.
  1. Prepare the Filling:
  • In a bowl, mix together the gulkand, desiccated coconut, fennel seeds, tutti frutti, chopped dates, chopped nuts, sugar-coated fennel seeds, and cardamom powder.
  • Optionally, you can add sweetened condensed milk or khoya to make the filling richer and creamier.
  1. Assemble the Paan:
  • Take a betel leaf and place it on a clean surface with the glossy side facing down.
  • Spoon about a teaspoon of the prepared filling onto the center of the leaf.
  • Fold the bottom edge of the leaf up over the filling, then fold in the sides to form a cone or a parcel. You can also fold it into a triangular shape if you prefer.
  • Secure the folded leaf with a toothpick if necessary, or simply press it down to hold its shape.
  1. Garnish and Serve:
  • Place a glazed cherry on top of each paan for an extra touch of sweetness and color.
  • Serve immediately or wrap each paan in a piece of aluminum foil to keep them fresh until ready to eat.

Tips:

  • You can customize the filling to your taste by adding or omitting ingredients such as sweetened coconut, dried fruits, or even chocolate chips.
  • If you prefer a stronger flavor, you can add a few drops of kewra essence or rose water to the filling.
  • Sweet paan can be stored in the refrigerator for a few hours, but it’s best enjoyed fresh.

Enjoy your homemade sweet paan as a delightful after-meal treat!
